Tajweed means to pronounce the letters of the Qur’an correctly and beautifully. It is the set of rules that teaches us how every letter should sound when we recite, giving each letter its proper rights and characteristics.

These rules are not new — the Qur’an was revealed with them. Angel Jibreel taught the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ exactly how to recite it, and the Prophet ﷺ then taught his companions the same way.

So when we learn Tajweed, we are learning to recite the Qur’an the way it was originally revealed.
