Tajwid is concisely defined as: "the science through which every letter (of the Glorious Qur'an) is given its due right". Through the infinite mercy of Allah (SWT), this science has been blessed with the attention of remarkable individuals of this Ummah who have most diligently learnt, understood, practised, safeguarded and passed it on to the masses. They have maintained the integrity of the science of Tajwid through a consecutive chain of learning which traces back to our Nabi (PBUH), then Jibril (AS)and ultimately to Allah (SWT) & Himself. May Allah & shower His mercy on them all. Imam Shātbi (RA) states: 

جزى الله بِالخَيْرَاتِ عَنَّا أَئِمَّةً ... لَنَا تَقلُوا القُرْآنَ عَذْباً وَسَلْسَلَا 
May Allah & reward with many blessings our Imams, who have passed (down) the Qur'an (to us) sweetly and with a consecutive chain.

Tajwid is the foundation of correct pronunciation and the adornment of recitation of the Glorious Qur'an. Indeed, it holds a much emphasised and integral status in Islam and is an essential requirement for each and every Muslim. Many well versed Qurra' (Masters of Qura'nic recitation), the likes of Khatimatul Qurra' 'Allamah Shams- ud-Din Ibn-ul-Jazri (RA) and others have categorized the practical acquisition of the science of Tajwid as compulsory upon every individual. 'Allamah (RA)famously states: 

والأخذ بالتجويد حتم لازم ... مَنْ لم يُجَودِ الْقُرآن آثم 
The acquisition of Tajwid is most necessary... one who does not recite the Qur'an with Tajwid is sinful." 

Without doubt the acquisition of this science under the supervision of experienced and well versed Huffaz and Social is an effective means of inculcating this vital knowledge for ones correct recitation of the Glorious Qur'an.
