About The Book

The journey of this book began while I was teaching at my local Maktab. At the time, I was looking for a Tajweed book that was simple, clear, and suitable for young learners, yet still covered the essentials.

It was at this point that I decided to write my own book. I wanted to ensure all the essential rules of Tajweed were included for a Maktab student. My aim was to make the book clear, engaging, and easy to teach and understand-especially for young minds.

Qari Yahya Ali Sahib helped to review the book, correct any errors, and make it more accessible. He dedicated many hours of his valuable time to help shape the book into what it is today. Qari Yahya Sahib is a teacher of Tajweed at the Islamic Dawah Academy in Leicester. May Allah (SWT) reward him abundantly and increase him in knowledge and practice. Aameen.

My beloved niece, Sawdah Mulla created all the illustrations in this book and helped to make it visually engaging and appealing to young readers. May Allah (SWT) make her work a means of making the learning of Tajweed an enjoyable and meaningful experience for our children. Aameen.

Much care and effort has gone into ensuring that the information in this book was thoroughly reviewed and revised where needed. This short course has been put together as a guide to help understand the basic rules of Tajweed. An effort has also been made to explain the symbols that appear in the Glorious Qur'an.

What is Tajweed

Tajwid is concisely defined as: "the science through which every letter (of the Glorious Qur'an) is given its due right". Through the infinite mercy of Allah (SWT), this science has been blessed with the attention of remarkable individuals of this Ummah who have most diligently learnt, understood, practised, safeguarded and passed it on to the masses. They have maintained the integrity of the science of Tajwid through a consecutive chain of learning which traces back to our Nabi (PBUH), then Jibril (AS)and ultimately to Allah (SWT) & Himself. May Allah & shower His mercy on them all. Imam Shātbi (RA) states:

جزى الله بِالخَيْرَاتِ عَنَّا أَئِمَّةً ... لَنَا تَقلُوا القُرْآنَ عَذْباً وَسَلْسَلَا
May Allah & reward with many blessings our Imams, who have passed (down) the Qur'an (to us) sweetly and with a consecutive chain.

Tajwid is the foundation of correct pronunciation and the adornment of recitation of the Glorious Qur'an. Indeed, it holds a much emphasised and integral status in Islam and is an essential requirement for each and every Muslim. Many well versed Qurra' (Masters of Qura'nic recitation), the likes of Khatimatul Qurra' 'Allamah Shams- ud-Din Ibn-ul-Jazri (RA) and others have categorized the practical acquisition of the science of Tajwid as compulsory upon every individual. 'Allamah (RA)famously states:

والأخذ بالتجويد حتم لازم ... مَنْ لم يُجَودِ الْقُرآن آثم
The acquisition of Tajwid is most necessary... one who does not recite the Qur'an with Tajwid is sinful."

Without doubt the acquisition of this science under the supervision of experienced and well versed Huffaz and Social is an effective means of inculcating this vital knowledge for ones correct recitation of the Glorious Qur'an.
